NYU Skirball Center for New Media Faculty Search - Director of Gaming

New York University is establishing a multi-school center for the research design and development of electronic interactive games to be housed in Skirball Center for New Media at Tisch School of the Arts, and is searching for a faculty director (Arts Professor track – open rank) for an appointment to commence in September 2008.

Already a dominant form of entertainment rivaling film, television, recorded music, games are in the process of becoming a major art form, a site for new convergences of art and technology, vehicles for new approaches to learning, and opportunities for cultural studies.   The ideal candidate will understand the multiple roles of games in our culture and can work across several schools in the university (Courant, Tisch School of the Arts, Steinhardt and Stern School of Business) and across several disciplines to accomplish the following:

Develop curricula (both undergraduate and graduate) in game design, development and game studies; work with faculty advisory board to: identify appropriate faculty hires - part time and full time - from within and outside of the university to teach within the new curriculum; set admissions standards; develop facilities and identify equipment needs

The director will have experience in the professional community of game research, development and design and would also have had experience in an academic setting.  On-going professional work while teaching is encouraged and expected.  In addition to the duties above, faculty member will teach, advise students, and participate in departmental and/or school-wide committees.  Salary to be negotiated and excellent benefits package.
